Expecting the unexpected: electronic paper shines at CES 2015

The Consumer Electronics Show once again excelled as the proving ground for innovators and breakthrough technologies, including electronic paper.

Expect the unexpected”, CES 2015 informed us, “it’s exactly what to expect.” So we could not say we were not forewarned as we headed to Vegas to attend the International Consumer Electronics Show 2015.

And we were not disappointed: CES once again excelled as the proving ground for innovators and breakthrough technologies, showcasing exciting new products ranging from self-driving cars to candy 3D printers (which we desperately want to own).

But nothing tickled our fancy quite as much as the exciting uses of the electronic paper technology that could be seen on the showroom floor.

E-paper’s versatility of use

Visionect was at CES as a partner of E Ink, showcasing our conference room booking assistant Joan that features E Ink’s e-paper display.

But the interactive conference room booking signage was not the only interesting electronic paper gadget to see at E Ink’s stand. 2014 was definitely the year e-paper finally broke out of its shell, and this fact was more than clear in Vegas this January. Some of the products had been seen before in one iteration or another, others were brand new – but all were amazing.

Below we present some of the highlights of e-paper at International CES this year, including color digital signage, writable tablets and an amazing way of reimagining the design of your walls. The future sure looks bright (and has absolutely no glare).

Electronic paper signage solutions support the deployment of information displays, feature low power consumption and can even show colors. Not to mention the fact that they blend effortlessly into the design of the street furniture.

Joan is a digital door sign system from Visionect that that allows for meeting room booking at the door, while also showing updates on meetings already scheduled. It features E Ink’s 6 inch electronic paper display with 16 level grayscale and a 800×600 screen resolution with full capacitive touch screen interface.

Sony’s 13.3’’ electronic paper tablet DPTS1 wants to replace your notebook: with the digital paper system you can browse and edit documents, and even scribble things down on e-paper.
